The short version
RV Compass (“we,” “us”), built in Boerne, Texas, is a trip planner and RV-safe navigation app. We collect what we need to plan your trips, keep your account synced, and process payments — and nothing to sell to advertisers. We don't sell or trade your personal information. Transparency is a brand pillar, and that starts here.
What we collect
- Account. Your email address and password (passwords are hashed by our authentication provider — we never see them). Optionally a display name, avatar, bio, and home-base location if you set them.
- Trip data. The trips you build — stops, routes, dates, notes, reservations, and your rig's specifications (dimensions, weight, MPG). This is the core of the product.
- Location. Coordinates you enter for stops, and — only while you turn on GPS following — your device's live position, used for on-route guidance. If you also enable live sharing, a “last seen” position is stored about once a minute so late-joining viewers see where you are.
- Photos. Images you upload for a place or your rig. Uploads are re-encoded server-side, which strips EXIF metadata (including GPS coordinates). Photos are private by default; making one public is an explicit per-photo choice.
- Community contributions. Reviews, ratings, place suggestions, and hazard/road-alert reports you submit.
- Payment data. If you subscribe, our payment processor (Stripe) collects and stores your card details. We never receive or store your full card number — we keep only your subscription status and billing period.
- Opt-in ETA telemetry. If you turn it on, we collect one number per completed leg: how long it actually took versus predicted. Never your location, never a track. Off by default.
- Technical logs & product analytics. Like nearly every app, our infrastructure records standard request data (IP address, browser/device type) for security and operations, we use error monitoring to catch crashes, and we use privacy-respecting, cookieless product analytics to understand which features are used and where people get stuck. No advertising trackers, and nothing is sold.
How we use it
- To compute RV-safe routes, ETAs, weather, and cost estimates for your trips.
- To sync your trips and rigs across your devices and keep your account secure.
- To process your subscription and send billing and renewal notices.
- To power features you invoke — the AI Trip Builder, place search, live sharing, milestone badges — and to improve routing accuracy from opt-in telemetry.
- To respond to support requests and, only if you opt in, product updates.
We do not use your data for third-party advertising, and we do not sell it.
Who we share it with (service providers)
We rely on a small set of vendors to run the app. They process data only to provide their service to us:
- Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage for your account, trips, and photos.
- Stripe — payment processing and subscription billing.
- Vercel — application hosting and delivery.
- Mapbox — maps and address geocoding.
- Anthropic — the AI Trip Builder (Pro). Your prompt and trip context are sent to generate a plan; they are not used to train models on your data.
- WeatherAPI.com — weather forecasts (coordinates only, no account data).
- Amazon SES — transactional email (verification, receipts, reminders).
- PostHog — cookieless product analytics (which features are used, where people drop off). No advertising, no session recording.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.
What's public, and only if you choose
Your account and trips are private by default. Two things become visible only when you opt in: a public profile at your chosen handle (with the sections you enable — stats, badges, photos, rigs, and privacy-processed trip shapes), and any trip you share by link. Sharing links are unguessable, viewers can't edit anything, and turning sharing off revokes the link immediately.
Your choices and rights
- Access and correction. View and edit your profile, trips, and rigs in the app at any time.
- Deletion. You can delete individual trips, rigs, and photos, or your entire account and all of its data at any time from Profile → Account → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and permanent, and cancels any active subscription. Prefer we handle it? Email hello@rvcompass.app.
- Opt-outs. Live sharing, public profiles, and ETA telemetry are all off until you enable them, and can be turned off again anytime.
- State privacy rights. Depending on where you live (for example, California, Texas, and other US states), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of your data. Contact us to exercise them; we don't sell personal information or use it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Data retention & security
We keep your data while your account is active and for a reasonable period afterward to meet legal and operational needs, then delete or anonymize it. All user data sits behind row-level security so one account can never read another's. No system is perfectly secure, but we design for least access and encrypt data in transit.
Children
RV Compass isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. A paid subscription requires you to be at least 18.
Changes
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the effective date above and, for significant changes, notify you in the app or by email. Questions? Email hello@rvcompass.app.
